We grow liquid crystal samples here using our wet lab facilities. The early stages of growth of all liquid crystal used in synchrotron experiments at the ALS, SSRL, and NSLS are performed here. The final stage of sample preparation is completed at the beamline, just before x-ray experiments are performed. This lab contains our physical property measurement system (PPMS) with a 14 Tesla magnet as well as a four-circle diffractometer for the characterization of liquid crystals and high-temperature superconducting samples. In this lab we are preparing to grow large volume, single-crystal materials such as high-Tc cuprates and other strongly correlated electron materials systems. This lab will house two traveling solvent, floating zone (TSFZ) furnaces. |
